A little history about Townhouse Trouville
Built around 1890, we have not yet been able to find out whether the house was originally built as a hotel or a private home. What is certain, however, is that it was the “Hotel de la Mer” for a long time and was eventually converted into an apartment hotel.
Under various owners, it had names such as “Villa Madeleine André” or “Villa MGM”.
We are continuing our research.
Normandy itself, especially the Cote Fleurie, became famous back in the 18th century: it was here that Europe’s first “influencer” invented bathing in the sea. It was in Dieppe, more than two centuries ago, that 19-year-old Maria Carolina, Princess of Bourbon-Sicily and Duchess of Berry, entered the sea for the first time in France. Bathing in the sea, especially as a noblewoman, was absolutely unusual at the time. Since then, the French town of Dieppe (131 km from Trouville-sur-Mer) in Normandy can boast of having invented beach life.
Trouville-sur-Mer, known as the “Queen of the Beaches” in the 19th century, quickly preceded all other towns. It was connected to the rail network and thus became a “city beach” for Parisians. The largest casino in France at the time was built: with a large theater stage and ceremonial hall. Numerous luxury hotels of the “Belle Epoque” followed. The town of Deauville on the opposite bank of the Touques was built on the dried floodplain of the river. The new city developed quickly and is now affectionately known as the “21st arrondissement” of Paris.
